Quick Navigation

Basic Things You Need To Get Started In Transcription Jobs

Since you’ll be working remotely from home or anywhere as an Independent Contractor in most cases, it’s expected that you have at least the first three (3) items in the list below. The last three items are mostly optional since every company has their own preference.

However, having them will expand your scope of companies to work with and some of them will improve on your efficiency especially the Foot Pedal.

  • Desktop Computer or Laptop
  • Fast Internet Connection
  • Headset or Earpiece
  • Foot Pedal
  • Free Express Scribe
  • Microsoft Word

Having this basic equipment is one thing and having the basic transcription skills is another thing you have to learn or prepare yourself for. For some of the skills, you’ll become better at it as you gain experience. A few to note are:

  • Good listening skills
  • Fast typing skills (At least 60 WPM will be a good starting point)
  • Good eye for grammar, punctuation and details
  • You should be familiar with legal terms
  • Strong proofreading skills
  • Above-average computing skills with technological know-how
  • Good at following instructions

The last thing you would want to add to the above is determination. While these opportunities provide you with the flexibility to work from home or anywhere, it could be lonely at times sitting behind your computer at one corner in your room.

You have to constantly pick yourself up forge forward and you can as well join transcription pages on Facebook for encouragement. Let’s cut to the chase……

  1. What a lot of information you’ve unearthed for us!  I’m impressed with the number of choices you have given us.

I am a fast typist (80 wpm, at least) and have considered legal transcription.  I’ve done some similar jobs.  However, it is not fun for me any more, so will put this one on a back burner for now. I do think it is very nice to know such jobs are available, as it could certainly be something I need at some time.

Your review of the opportunities available is impressively thorough.  Thanks for sending us these possibilities. There are surely people out there who will find this information extremely valuable.
